1- OCI Applications are accepted only on Wednesdays between 0930 hours and 1200 hours.
2- The timings for collection for OCI are from 09:30 to 11:00 Hrs on Monday, Thursday and Friday. For collection, prior appointment is not needed. Please bring the receipt given at the time of submission. Alternatively, these documents can be delivered to you via post. For more details, please ask at Consular staff at the time of submission.
3- To know the Embassy holidays, on which OCI Card services will not be given, please click on Embassy Holidays List.
4- While submitting the OCI application, please provide authenticated English translation of all supportive Portuguese documents (such as birth certificate, nationality acquiring certificate etc.). Without translated documents, application will not be accepted. 

Eligibility Criteria:   A foreign national, who was eligible to become citizen of India on 26.01.1950 or was a citizen of India on or at any time after 26.01.1950 or belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947, along with his/her children and grand children (up to three generations) is eligible for registration as an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). Minor children of such persons are also eligible for OCI. However, if the applicant had ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, he/she will not be eligible for OCI.
Documents Required:   Documents required to be submitted at the time of making application either at the OCI Counter at the Embassy or by post:
  (i) Application Form: OCI application being an Internet-based process, all applicants have to apply by online through Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India website https://passport.gov.in/oci/welcome.

Important steps: 
- Click on OCI online registration. Online OCI Registration Form screen opens. This is Part A. (If your computer does not open this link, download security certificate file, and follow the instructions to install the security certificate on your computer. Otherwise you need not install the security certificate.) 
- Fill in this form, which is Part A. Keep your printer ready.
- Once you fill up Part-A online, Submit, and give Print command. 
Part-A with online registration number (PRTLI.....) will be printed along with Part-B blank form. Note down the registration number.
- Part-B can be hand written or printed.
- For each family application, Part-B is common to all applicants of the family up to a maximum of four. Separate applications are required for any other additional members.
- If you need to re-print Part A and Part B, you can do so by opening OCI Registration page again, click on Re-print Form. Enter your registration number and date of birth and click on Print.

  (ii) Photograph: One photograph (4x4cm. with 80% coverage of face) should be pasted on the application form. Photograph should be of light colour background with front pose, both shoulders and both ears visible.
  (iii) Photocopies of the first page of valid Portuguese/Foreign Passport and ID card.
  (iv) Copy of Naturalization Certificate (from the Conservatória), stating the date of acquisition of Portuguese/Foreign Nationality. (It applies to those who have acquired Portuguese / foreign citizenship by changing their citizenship)
  (v) Indian Origin Proof - Birth Certificate:
    Applicants who at any time had an Indian passport:

Should submit their surrender Certificate: OCI applicants should surrender their Indian Passports, if they have not already done so, and submit copy of Surrender Certificate along with the OCI application. 

Applicants who previously held an Indian Passport but are unable to produce the same for surrender for any reason (loss/misplacement/submitted to this Embassy long time back) are required to furnish a notarised affidavit in original (if Passport is already expired) and also a Police Report (in cases where Indian Passport was still valid).

Other Supporting Documents:   These documents are required to connect relationship/clarification (where applicable)
    · Change of name/appearance affidavit by Public Notary/ Oath Commissioner. 
· Birth Certificate from Indian Municipality or Panchayat. For applicants born in Portugal, full version of Birth Certificate from Registrar of Births/Local Borough, which needs to be translated in English by a reputed and registered translation authority. If one brings the International Birth Certificate, no need to get it translated.
· School Leaving Certificate, Nativity Certificate of the applicant or of his/her parents/grandparents issued from concerned Competent Authority in India i.e. District Magistrate/Collectors/Sub Divisional Magistrate of the District/Sub Divisions, may also be accepted as a proof of Indian Origin, always in addition to the birth certificate. 
· If the applicant is making application on the basis of documents of parents or grandparents, documentary relationship proof must be provided. In case of documents of parents/grandparents being used, only Indian Passport copies or Indian Birth Certificate copies are acceptable.
    NOTE: All original documents should be kept ready for verification on demand, at the time of submission of OCI application. Please take into consideration that all original documents originating from India have to be attested by the Home Department of the State. Always bring original and copy of above said documents.
Important clarification/Information   Full signature in the box should be provided in case of major. Thumb impression (left hand thumb for male & right hand thumb for female) or signature should be provided in case of minor. Parents should sign on the 3rd page of the form.
· Applicant will be responsible for any correction/omission;
· Full Version birth certificate needed for link between parents; 
· Laminated document will not be accepted; 
· Non-Portuguese passport holder should give residential address in respective country and such cases require more processing time; 
· OCI cannot be applied on the basis of spouse's Indian origin; 
· If you are sending more than one application, please send one detailed letter with details of all applications (with amount & PRTL nos.) 
· If the supporting documents are not satisfactory applicant will be asked to provide more Documentary evidence. 

It is an offence to knowingly furnish false information or to suppress material information when applying for OCI. 

The grant of OCI card does not entitle the holder to visit Restricted/Protected areas without prior specific permission to visit such areas. 

OCI card does not entitle the holder to undertake missionary, mountaineering or research work without prior permission to undertake such activities.
Status Report:   Applicants are expected to track the progress of the OCI application at https://passport.gov.in/oci/OnlineOCIenquiry.jsp after 3-4 weeks of submission of application (to check the online status you have to enter your passport number along with Online Registration number or Reference / Acknowledgement number.
Miscellaneous OCI Services: Issue of Another OCI Card:   · Registration for any service is to be done through online registration at https://passport.gov.in/oci/welcome.
· New Passport Number should be entered for transfer of OCI Card to new Passport or in case of loss/damage/fresh passport. 
· Applicants have to show their old Passport and old OCI Card at the time of submission of application at the counter. 
· Applicants should fill up new Passport number not the old Passport number to avoid problems. 
· OCI card will be printed & pasted on the Passport whose details are given/filled in the application form. 
· Applicants should enclose old OCI Sticker page photocopy of Passport and old OCI Card copy along with copy of new Passport. The old OCI card will have to be surrendered at the Embassy.

  1- Do I have to fill all columns when filling up the application online?
Yes. It is mandatory that no column is left unanswered.
  2- What are the eligibility criteria for minor applicants to get OCI? 
One of the parents should be eligible for OCI.
  3- Are 'Empire of India' Passports issued by the British authorities in India prior to Indian Independence accepted as a proof of Indian Origin?
No, if they state the National Status of the holder as British subject by birth. Yes, if they state the National Status of the holder as person of British Protectorate, originally a citizen of a place in India.
  4- Is there an emergency service for OCI?
No. If you are travelling in the near future and have an emergency, please apply for visa.
  5- What is the processing time of application? 
Around 4-5 weeks. As shown above, applicants are required to check the status on MHA website. No separate intimation will be sent to the applicant about the status of their application. Once the OCI cards are ready for collection, a consular officer will call the applicant and he/she can come to the Embassy. PLEASE don’t come “just to see if it’s ready”.
  6- How long will it take for my OCI card to be ready? 
We expect the OCI cards to be ready for collection at the Embassy of India, Lisbon, in approximately 5-6 weeks. No enquiry would be entertained before 7 weeks from date of submission of application.
  7- Facing problems relating to access to online registration for fresh application or transfer through miscellaneous registration. What should I do?
Please read all instructions contained in Ministry of Home Affairs Website: https://passport.gov.in/oci/welcome with special attention to items: BROCHURE, F.A.Q. & F.A.Q.OCI MISCELLANEOUS, etc, therein.   8- Can OCI applications be made in India?

Revised Instruction relating to submission of OCI application.


The applicants desiring to register as OCI cardholder and to avail OCI Misc service shall submit the application form online and upload all the requisite documents (self attested) photographs and signature (in the case of minors who cannot sign, left hand thumb impression) along with the application.

After the applicant submit the complete application online including documents, photographs and signature, the originals of the supporting documents have to be submitted to the Indian Mission concerned for prior verification.

The above instructions are applicable with effect from 23.11.2015. No applications for OCI Card and for OCI Miscellaneous Service will be accepted without the uploading of documents online, as detailed above after 23.11.2015.
